Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our medication management.

  • While both use ketamine to treat depression, Spravato (Esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray specifically for treatment-resistant depression and is often covered by insurance. IM (Intramuscular) Ketamine is an injection that allows for highly precise dosing. During your consultation at our Eastern Idaho clinic, our providers will help determine which option is best for your unique needs.

  • Ketamine is typically recommended for adults who have tried two or more antidepressants without sufficient relief (often called Treatment-Resistant Depression). It is also used for those experiencing suicidal ideation or severe anxiety. We conduct a thorough psychological evaluation to ensure this treatment is a safe and effective choice for you.

  • Ketamine treatment is safe when provided in a clinical setting. At Ascend Mental Health Center, we prioritize your safety.
Before treatment begins, you will undergo an evaluation of your health history and current status to ensure you are a qualified candidate. Every session is medically supervised by trained professionals who continuously monitor your vital signs and comfort levels. We are committed to providing a calm, controlled environment to facilitate a positive and therapeutic experience.

  • Most patients describe the experience as relaxing or "dissociative," meaning you may feel a sense of detachment from your immediate surroundings. This effect is temporary and usually fades shortly after the session ends. You will remain in a private, comfortable room under the watchful eye of our clinical staff.

  • While we welcome referrals from other providers in East Idaho, you can also contact us directly. We will review your medical history and current symptoms to help you decide if our innovative treatments are the right next step for your mental health journey.

Treatment-resistant depression

Severe or persistent depressive symptoms

Certain anxiety-related disorders

Mood disorders that have not improved with standard medications

How Ketamine Treatment Works at Ascend

Step 1

Comprehensive Evaluation

Your provider completes a full psychiatric assessment, reviews your medical history, and determines whether ketamine is an appropriate and safe option.

Step 2

Personalized Treatment Planning

If ketamine is recommended, your provider outlines a structured plan tailored to your needs, including dosing, frequency, and expected timelines.

Step 3

In-Clinic Administration Only

All ketamine treatments are administered intramuscularly in our Idaho Falls clinic. Sessions are never self-administered and are not provided outside the medical setting.

Step 4

Continuous Medical Monitoring

A trained provider monitors your vital signs, comfort, and clinical response throughout every appointment, following strict evidence-based safety protocols.

Step 5

Recovery and Post-Session Review

You will remain onsite for recovery until medically cleared. Your provider will review how the session went and document your progress.

Step 6

Ongoing Evaluation and Adjustment

Your treatment plan is reviewed regularly to track improvement, adjust dosing if needed, and coordinate care with your ongoing medication management.
